Mac Mail Slowing Down My Computer

I did as suggested — create a new admin account in the Mac Mini then I tried to access my email accounts from a different admin account in the same machine.
Result: the email worked OK using a different admin account. There is no slowdown or lag in this new setup.
I could use that new account for emails but I have a lot of work on the other apps in the original account so I would be very interested to know what is troubling this particular Mac Mail issue so that it does not happen again and perhaps others can learn from it too.
